Tutoring and Coaching for Children with Special Needs
As credentialed special educators we are in a unique position to manage all aspects of private supplemental special education. Tutoring is one of our most sought out services but our tutors are only engaged following a formal assessmment of learning disability either by the school or through Special Solutions. After that, we will rigorously follow an Individual Educational Program (IEP) in our quest for higher educational performance and better grades for your child and we will track them continuously.
Private tutoring has been shown to improve grades. Many supplemental education centers specialize in small-group tutoring which is a good approach for most children. As the parent of a child with special needs, you probably suspect this approach will not work for your child and you are probably right. Mild to severe learning disabilities or developmental issues respond best to one-on-one individualized instruction.
Recently, because of advances in computer technology, online tutoring is beginning to usher in a new era of remote learning options for those seeking assistance. Again, because of the unique nature each individual learning style, one-on-one and face-to-face will always be the best option for your child.
The lives of children with special needs tend to be challenging. Having a coach is often a big help when just showing up with completed assignments on time is problematic and tends generate additional family stress, which can be counterproductive. Parents and teachers can only do so much. With the proper attitue and motivation, most obstacles can be overcome. It helps to have a coach and that is one of the things that we encourage parents to consider for their children. Our academic coaches all have advanced degrees in special education.
One final note, we believe that the supplemental learning enviornment is extremely important - as much like the home as possible but not necessarily in the student’s home, which may not yet be optimized for special needs instruction.
